I don't think we necessarily have to stop thinking of Christ as a shepherdas much as we need to change our thinking of what a shepard was. They were not the cute little precious moments characters that often come to mind, they were rugged, feirce defends of the flock. They gathered the scattered and wandering and kept them safe. They sought out the lost and brought them back to the flock. They killed the lion and the bear. When Christ compares himself to a shepherd, he is refering to the kind of shepherd David was as a young man and not the nativity scene version that we all think of.
